The supplies are bought, and the kids are ready to head back to school for another year of learning. While this is an exciting time, it can also be very dangerous. The Manitowoc Police Department pointed out on Facebook that back to school means more children will be out and about, causing potential dangers near schools. They issued several tips to help keep the children safe from harm. Be sure to stop 20 feet away from any bus with their flashing stop sign out. This includes both directions of travel. A vehicle owner can be cited when the driver of a car passes a school bus illegally. A law enforcement officer need not witness this violation if the school bus driver reports it to the law enforcement agency within 24 hours. Fines can be quite high for illegally passing a school bus, but the risk of hitting a child is even higher.
