The Office of the Inspector General at the V-A has issued a report indicating a patient who killed himself last year had received deficient care at the veteran’s hospital in Madison. Twenty-four-year-old Marine veteran Robert Franks-Mess killed himself one day after he was discharged. The federal report says the hospital staff could have held him for an additional 72 hours. Madison V-A Director John Rohrer says the hospital now does more coordination with family members and county crisis services before a veteran is discharged. Problems were also found with the discharge planning, follow-up and outpatient pharmacy care.
