A spokesperson for Milwaukee’s North Shore Health Department reports a dead crow has tested positive for the West Nile virus. People living in that part of the county are being urged to take steps to minimize their exposure to mosquito bites. Scientists say this is the first time a bird in Milwaukee County has tested positive for the virus since their surveillance efforts started in early May. About 80 percent of people infected with West Nile virus never know it. Others suffer minor symptoms, but less than one percent of victims can become seriously sick and even lapse into a coma. West Nile can be fatal for older adults and people with compromised immune systems.
