A local crop and dairy expert said farmers had a very late start to the growing season, but, given the stretch of hot weather, they’ve been able to catch up. Manitowoc County UW-Extension Agriculture agent Scott Gunderson tells Seehafer News the cool, wet spring conditions prevented the corn-crop from being planted in early May.
When asked how we measure-up to the time-tested farming axiom of corn being “knee high by the 4th of July”, Gunderson said.
He said the first and second crop yields produced good quality alfalfa hay for feed and added he thinks farmers and crop consultants alike are “very, very happy with what they have right now.” Still, Gunderson says “we could use a couple of nice soaking rains, not the gully-washers, especially at night.”
