A Chippewa County judge has ruled Walmart had no duty to protect a woman from herself. Melissa Abbott was shot to death by police two years ago. Abbott was on a field trip with others from the Northern Center for the Developmentally Disabled when she got mad, grabbed a hatchet off a store shelf and started swinging it around. She was shot to death when she lunged at a Lake Hallie police officer. Abbott’s family sued the retailer, but Judge James Isaacson cleared Walmart in a ruling this week.
