Some inland lakes in Manitowoc County are showing improved conditions this Spring…thanks to efforts by the Manitowoc County Lakes Association. MCLA president Tom Ward tells us that they were recently approved for a ‘grant’ to work in the watershed at ‘Carstens’ Lake in an effort to continue to reduce the ‘phosphorous’ problem there.
Ward added they hope to move this project plan to other lakes too. Also, the invasive Eurasian water Milfoil was removed late last week from ‘Cedar’ Lake by ‘non’-chemical means using a barge-type unit-to ‘suck’ up patches of the plant from the lake. Another effort by the County Lakes Association is in-the works at ‘Tuma’ Lake where the boat landing was shallow & weedy. He says a ‘new’ boat launch and-fishing pier are being put in.
That project is funded through donations they receive at boat launches, $13,000 collected in 2017 through Planning & Parks, to be used for lake improvements. Meanwhile, Ward says the MCLA received information last month about an intensive fish survey on 2-area lakes: Long & Bullhead. He explains they’re finding ‘good growth rate’ and both lakes have an ‘experimental’ panfish bag-limit that reduces the take.
