The historian for the Appleton American Legion has stepped down amidst stolen valor claims. Howard “Gordy” Clewell reportedly lied about serving during the Vietnam War, claiming to have been part of the Special Forces. Members of the American Legion say they have witnessed him wearing a Special Forces pin, a Ranger Tab, Combat Infantry Badge, and a Special Forces Unit patch, and had no reason to believe he was lying. According to the Wisconsin American Legion, Clewell has admitted he was lying about his service, and apologized. The story isn’t over for Clewell, as he could be facing a misdemeanor charge, due to the “Stolen Valor Act”.
