The Madison Common Council will vote on a proposal to increase the cost of residential parking permits by 50 percent. The Transit and Parking Commission approved a recommendation to raise the yearly rate from 28 dollars to 42 dollars. Those permits allow vehicle owners to park on the city streets for longer than the posted limits of one or two hours, depending on the location. The city says it needs to increase the rate to cover the cost of enforcing the rules. Even if the common council gives its approval, the additional revenue generated won’t cover the entire cost. That would require a rate of 105 dollars-a-year.
