With the massive spike in school shootings this year, one proposed way to combat the problem is to hire armed security guards for every school. A plan was brought forth to the Green Bay Area School District but Police Chief Andrew Smith back in February, but the School Board did not believe there was enough data to show that it would help. It would seem that the public would agree, as citizens that spoke at the board meeting tended to side with the board, saying they should be focusing on education, not guns. On top of a lack of focus, the general consensus was that it would be sending the wrong message to students. We spoke with Manitowoc Public School District Superintendent Mark Holsman shortly after the incident at Stoneman Douglas High School, and he told us that they trust their students will seek help as they need it.
