A fish die-off on Wisconsin’s Lake Winnebago isn’t expected to have a significant effect on the fish industry. Hundreds of dead fish were discovered in the Fond du Lac area 10 days ago and more were found in Asylum Bay and High Cliff State Park earlier this week. The Department of Natural Resources says viral hemorrhagic septicemia has been spreading among the susceptible species of fish in the big lake for the last dozen years. Most of the dead fish are freshwater drum — not game fish — as the fishing season starts this weekend. Experts say the infected fish are actually safe to consume.
