About one dozen residents of Port Edwards attended a public hearing this week where the community’s public safety committee discussed eliminating one of its four full-time police officers. The position is currently vacant. Several residents told city leaders doing that would make them feel less safe. The village of Port Edwards currently has a police chief, two full-time officers and two part-time officers on staff. Wisconsin law says villages with a population under five-thousand aren’t required to have a police department. Port Edwards’ population is a little over 18-hundred and national guidelines suggest one police officer per one-thousand residents. With three officers, the Wood County community exceeds that.
