It can be tough enough to land an airplane when the wind is gusting, but animals crossing the runway has been causing big problems at Lakeland Airport in Arbor Vitae. Airport Administrator Jon Schmitz has been trying to get a fence built around that runway for more than a decade — to keep the unwanted visitors off. Pilots often don’t see them until it is too late and that creates a dangerous situation. Schmitz hopes he can access funding from the Wisconsin Bureau of Aeronautics this summer, with work on the million-dollar project to start next year.
