Madison Police say a parent and a child found a loaded handgun on the ground behind an elementary school as they walked to class Thursday morning. The weapon was discovered on the far edge of the property around Leopold Elementary School, near Aldo Leopold Park. Police say it appeared to have been discarded recently and wasn’t rusted. The gun was reported stolen in Fitchburg in 2016. Leopold Elementary went on lockdown Wednesday after a shots-fired report was made near the school. Police haven’t officially connected the two incidents yet.
