Wausau Police report a standoff on the city’s northeast side has ended in the death of a 35-year-old man. His name hasn’t been released. Officers say they spent almost 24 hours trying to make a welfare check on him. When they tried to stop him Wednesday he took off and a short pursuit ended back at his house. After the man went inside, officers say they heard a gunshot as they approached. Several nearby homes were evacuated as a perimeter was set up. SWAT teams from the Marshfield Police Department and Wood County responded and, when they entered the house, they found the man dead. His death is being called a suicide.
