Child Protective Services has taken custody of six children after Milwaukee County deputies made a grim discovery Monday.
The deputies were at the residence to serve court documents and instead found two young children, ages three and eight, wearing only t-shirts, living in a home infested with cockroaches, mice, rats and other bugs. The deputies say the home also had a strong odor of human waste. After the discovery, additional detectives and Child Protective Services were called to assist.
A neighbor brought the children food while authorities were attempting to find the parents of the two children. After the mother arrived home, an interpreter was used to communicate with her. She said she had four other children in school and had left to run a few errands.
CPS took custody of the two children and arranged with the school to pick up the other 4.
A housing inspector was called to assess the living conditions. The situation has been referred to the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s office and the mother could be charged with child neglect.
