A Franklin Middle School student brought an airsoft gun to school, causing the school to write a letter to the parents of all the students. According to reports, the student did not threaten or harm anyone with the toy gun, which differs from a typical BB gun. While typical BB and pellet guns fire metal projectiles, an airsoft gun uses springs to launch plastic BB’s at a relatively slow speed, usually maxing out at around 450 feet per second, and are built to resemble real life firearms. While plastic BB’s shot at that speed can leave welts or cause blindness if struck in the eye, the likelihood of death is very low. Principal Jackie Houser stated in the letter to the parents that “safety is our highest priority” and urged parents with any questions to contact the school.
