A former mayor of Superior has been arrested and spent a night in the Douglas County Jail after losing control while driving and hitting a tree.
The 61-year-old, who has three convictions on his record for operating while intoxicated, pleaded not guilty Wednesday afternoon in Douglas County (Wis.) Circuit Court to misdemeanor charges of obstructing an officer and failure to install an ignition interlock device.
Authorities say he had left the wrecked car and walked to his cabin on Lake Nebagamon. He was charged with obstruction for “being less than truthful” when a Douglas County sergeant interviewed him. Bergson tried to pin the crash on his girlfriend, who they discovered was in Madison. Bergson also served as mayor of Duluth.
