Food stamp recipients wouldn’t be able to use their benefit to buy junk food under a bill passed by the Wisconsin Assembly and forwarded to the Senate. It passed on a voice vote Thursday. It’s likely the state would need to get a federal waiver to put the prohibition into place. Opponents say the restriction won’t improve the health of those who use food stamps and would increase the cost of food. The Wisconsin Grocers Association is against it. If it passes, the state would list food and drinks which lack nutritional value and prohibit the use of FoodShare benefits to buy them.
