Governor Scott Walker says he’s told legislative leaders it is important to pass a major overhaul of the state’s juvenile corrections system this year. Senator Majority Leader Scott Fitzgerald has questioned whether that could be accomplished by the time the legislative session ends in mid-March. Walker told reporters Wednesday he is still optimistic. He wants the Lincoln Hills School for Boys and Copper Lake School for Girls to be closed, with inmates moved to smaller facilities around Wisconsin. The youth prison in Irma has been involved in several federal lawsuits. There have been allegations of abuse of inmates and unsafe working conditions for staff members. A committee hearing on the overhaul is being held today at the state Capitol.
