A committee made up of school board members, educators and civilians will make a recommendation in two weeks on whether Monona Grove schools should continue teaching from the book, “To Kill a Mockingbird.” The parent of a 14-year-old student complains the racially-charged language in the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel is inappropriate for students. Tujama Kameeta wants it removed. He’s troubled that the N-word appears in the book almost 50 times. Superintendent Dan Olson will have the option of accepting the five-person committee’s recommendation — or modifying it.
