Federal court records show the Western District of Wisconsin had the most farm bankruptcies last year in any U-S court district. Wisconsin farmers are struggling with low commodity prices for corn, soybeans and milk. While the prices remain low, the cost of doing business keeps rising. There were 28 farm bankruptcy cases in 2017 in western Wisconsin. Many farmers are seeking lines of credit from seed or equipment companies. Agricultural finance experts say that could mean even more bankruptcies. Farmers might work out a payment schedule with a single lender, but that’s a much bigger challenge when they owe multiple lenders.
