22 year old Mathew Brown-Edwards was in court for his initial appearance in Manitowoc County Circuit Court yesterday after being charged with the death of his girlfriend’s 2 month old baby girl. Brown-Edwards told police that in the afternoon on January 17th, he picked up the baby and shook her forcefully because she wouldn’t stop crying. He went on to say that he accidentally dropped her on the floor, and saw her eyes roll back into her head. Brown-Edwards then told officers that he attempted to give the baby CPR, and placed her back in the swing before his girlfriend returned from the store. His girlfriend told police that she left the house around 2:00 PM that day to get snow pants for her older child from her grandmother. An autopsy determined the baby’s injuries and death were consistent with blunt force trauma to the head, and severe physical abuse. The report went on to say that “the child’s injuries ware consistent with the last history provided to law enforcement involving shaking of the infant and impact while dropping the child.” He is being held in the Manitowoc County Jail on a $150,000 cash bond.
