Workers were evacuated from the Kohler Company plant late Wednesday because liquid metal in the plant’s foundry could have exploded. Fire crews responded when heavy smoke and fire was reported escaping from the building’s roof. The fire started in the basement. Firefighters weren’t able to use water at first due to the liquid metal, so dry chemicals were applied until they were able to find the source of the fire. Firefighters from 10 departments were on the scene for more than six hours. No injuries were reported and the complex returned to normal operations Thursday.
