Unemployment rates for both Manitowoc and Manitowoc County “rose slightly” in December. Numbers released this afternoon by the State Department of Workforce Development show the city’s jobless rate was three percent—up from two-point-nine percent in November but dramatically down from December 2016’s number of four-point-five percent. Manitowoc County recorded similar numbers as the city with three percent of its workforce unemployed—up from two-point-nine percent in November and down from last December’s rate of four-point-three percent. Preliminary December 2017 figures show that eighteen of the state’s thirty-two largest municipalities—including Green Bay and Neenah—reached or tied their lowest December unemployment rates on record. In addition—today’s release follow last week’s release of business labor statistics estimates showing a preliminary seasonally adjusted statewide unemployment rate of three percent which sets a new record for lowest December rate on record.
