Madison police say a Twitter campaign to convince owners to lock their cars is having an effect. The theft of items from vehicles fell by more than 37 percent last month, when compared to 2016. The hash tag Nightly Lockup campaign started in mid-November. Madison police received 64 reports of thefts from vehicles in December, compared to 102 in the same month last year. Although owners are apparently locking their cars up each night, they are still leaving them running and unlocked during daytime cold weather while running errands. The theft of cars is actually up slightly.
