Frostbite can develop and effect many within only a few minutes of exposure to extreme cold. Dr. Janeen Hudzinski, Holy Family Memorial Family Practice Practitioner, said, “The skin is cooled, and numb. Sometimes it can look white or grey, and feel kind of hard or waxy. You could have trouble moving the affected area. If your Fingers have frostbite, hey may feel clumsy. Later on the person might develop blisters. If the area has black skin, that’s a sign of severe frostbite, that should really be evaluated.” She told us that the young and elderly are the most susceptible to frostbite, but everyone needs to take a break, saying, “It’s particularly important for children who might be outside for a long time playing, but adults that are working outside, taking a break, making sure that your hands and feet are ok can be very appropriate.” She went on to encourage everyone to stay safe until the weather warms up. That, however, may be a while, as the long range forecast indicates that temps may not reach 20 above for another week or more.
