High recruitment standards and a growing list of retirements has the Green Bay Police Department scrambling to fill open positions. The department currently has 187 officers and to be fully staffed it would need 194. Chief Andrew Smith says 13 of his officers are retiring this year and, over the next five years, 50-to-60 will leave. Smith says character is more important than just filling an open position, so that will slow the process.
