Peter’s Pantry in Manitowoc provides between $1.5 and$2 million worth of food to those in need every year. Pat DeWane is one of the six original co-founders of the Pantry, which began its’ miracle of sharing in May of 1988, at their own building. Pat told us they are “…operating four trucks. Some of the stores require that you have a refrigerated truck in order to donate to you. The most recent used refrigerated truck we bought, cost $41,000. So, we have the annual cost for utilities, gas, and truck maintenance, and the like, but we have a volunteer force of some 50 to 70 people.” W asked one of those volunteers, Kay Schmidt, what kind of satisfaction she gets from helping the pantry. She said, “Just giving back to the community and helping people out. I enjoy it.” Kay has been helping out four days a week for the past seven years. Peter’s Pantry serves an estimated 1500 individuals across the city and county on a weekly basis. If you wish to donate items, or volunteer, call the pantry at (920) 682-6989.
