Madison Mayor Paul Soglin says alcohol-fueled violence along State Street is a factor in his veto of a liquor license for a Taco Bell Cantina. The Madison City Council had given the license overwhelming approval earlier this month. Police say they are stretched thin and most of the demands on their resources come from incidents driven by alcohol. Soglin says “it’s a miracle” there hasn’t been a homicide in that area. A Madison police spokesman says it’s time to evaluate whether State Street can handle any more licensed liquor-selling businesses.
