The Wisconsin Institute of Healthy Aging reports the rate of elderly residents dying in falls here is twice the national average. Wisconsin ranks second among the states in fall-related deaths for its residents 65 and older. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says falls account for an emergency room visit every 11 seconds. The Wisconsin Department of Human Services is reporting 48 of the state’s 72 counties have seen a 50 percent increase in emergency department visits for injuries caused by falls among the elderly over a four-year period.
