Seehafer News sat down with Manitowoc County Executive Bob Zigelbauer, and he updated us on the latest developments as to when the Meijer store will be built. He stated, “The latest we heard…they will be building in 2019, so a year and a half from now, and opening up at the end of the year, or the first of the year in 2020.” He went on to say that the construction of the Panera Bread strip mall will in all likely hood be completed sooner than the Meijer store. The grocery/general merchandise chain is based in Grand Rapids Michigan, and approached the county board in December 2015 with an unsolicited offer to purchase 27 1/2 acres of the expo grounds for $4.3 million. This offer was approved by the board in January of last year. County Board Chair Jim Brey said at the time, that the sale proceeds will make the Expo Grounds sustainable into the future and will provide an additional tax base, making this a “win-win for everyone”. Also, approximately 300 jobs will be created by the addition of the store.
