A bill written by Wisconsin’s Sixth District congressman has made it through a committee.
Congressman Glenn Grothman’s BOP Direct-Hire Authority Act would help the Bureau of Prisons address the ongoing staffing shortages.
It specifically means that federal prisons can directly hire employees until they reach a 96% staffing level.
The Glenbeulah Republican stated that he’s heard concerns about staffing at prisons like Wisconsin’s Oxford Federal Correctional Institution, which deserves attention.
Rep. Grothman adds that federal prisons need enough correctional officers and other employees to keep facilities running safely and effectively.
Rep. Grothman finishes by saying that the federal government has “a responsibility to support the men and women who work in our federal prisons and give them the personnel they need to do their jobs. I am glad to see this legislation move forward, and I will continue my efforts to get it signed into law.”
