An Ice Rescue/Search Call by the Kiel Fire Department yesterday turned out to be a false alarm. Lieutenant Kevin Voland, Public Information Officer for the K-F-D, said personnel were dispatched shortly before 11:30am to the report of a subject who had been on the ice of the Sheboygan River across from Millhome Supper Club, and then suddenly disappeared. The department spokesman said multiple people reported seeing the subject approximately 4-feet away from open water, and then a short time later nowhere in sight. Kiel requested mutual aid from Calumet & Sheboygan County Dive Teams as Surface Rescue units were positioned along & on a quarter mile stretch of the partially-frozen river as well as at a nearby dam. Divers were in the water searching for about 45-minutes when a subject approached the command post. That person had been on the ice around the same time & location of the 9-1-1 calls going out and had apparently walked-off-the ice when witnesses weren’t watching and never fell into the water. Kiel Fire and Ambulance Service received assistance from numerous agencies including Elkhart Lake Fire & First Responders, New Holstein Fire, Valders Fire Department, Kiel Police, Manitowoc County Sheriff’s Department, Wisconsin State Patrol & the Department of Natural Resources.
