Bail was set at $500 cash for a 36-year-old Manitowoc man facing several charges in connection to a dog starvation death last week. James Nettles is charged with mistreatment of animals causing death—intentional mistreatment of animals—two counts of failure to provide shelter or sanitation and two counts of failure to provide food and drink. He’s also is charged with felony bail jumping in connection to a separate case. Police responded early last week to a residence in the 1100 block of North Eighth Street for an argument between a couple which turned out to be over the death of one of their two dogs. Both dogs were kept downstairs. The deceased canine had no food in its stomach or small intestines while the other dog suffered from starvation and was extremely underweight and dehydrated. Nettles remains in the County Jail and his initial appearance is scheduled for next Monday at 2:30.
