A Manitowoc couple is facing charges in connection with the death of one of their two dogs. Police are recommending charges to the District Attorney’s office against James and Jennifer Nettles which include one count of mistreating animals causing death. James Nettles also faces one count of felony bail jumping as he was out on bail in a separate case and is being held in the Manitowoc County Jail. Jennifer Nettles was released. Officers responded shortly before seven Tuesday evening to a residence in the 1100 block of North Eighth Street for a report of the two yelling at each other which turned out to be about the dog’s passing. Both dogs were kept downstairs and according to the police report stacks of baby toys were covered in feces and strong odor of feces was present. Officers add that no water or food dish could be found however there was a bag of dog food that James Nettles said he got on Monday. A veterinarian determined that the live dog suffered from starvation and was extremely underweight and dehydrated and was expected to be taken to the Lakeshore Humane Society and be properly cared for. The deceased canine had no food in its stomach or small intestines while the large intestines contained no feces. Seehafer News could not verify court dates for either defendant.
