A 3-1 win Monday afternoon at Wrigley Field secures the National League Central Division title for the red-hot Milwaukee Brewers. Lorenzo Cain knocked in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and the Milwaukee bullpen locked down the team’s eighth-straight victory entering the playoffs. Cain said he was fired up after tallying that hit.
Shortstop Orlando Arcia went four-for-four, Corey Knebel got the win in relief and Josh Hader closed it out. NL MVP Christian Yelich went 3-4 but could not claim the triple crown, but said that it’s just great to avoid the Wild Card play in game.
Manager Craig Counsell said that “Yeli” lead the way.
The Cubs’ only run came on an Anthony Rizzo homer. The victory in the tie-breaker by Milwaukee means the Cubs host Colorado today (Tuesday) in the Wild Card game. The Brewers are off until Thursday when they meet the winner of that game, meaning they could have a series against the Cubs again. Brewer General Manager David Stearns spoke about that possibility.
