Restoration work continues on the Manitowoc County Historical Society’s Meeme House Project. Executive Director Amy Meyer says the roof was re-set and secured last Friday on the local landmark at its home in the Pinecrest Historical Village. The Meeme House Inn was built around 1855 by farmer and new immigrant Michael Herr along the Green Bay Road connecting Fort Dearborn in Chicago and Fort Howard in Green Bay. For around a dollar a day—customers had a place to sleep—eat and receive feed and stabling for a team of horses. It also consisted of a tavern on the first floor and a large ballroom on the second floor plus it served as a voting venue until a new poll house was built in 1900. A full restoration under the ownership of Joe Schwartz will feature an interior overhaul plus construction of an Emergency Shelter in the basement. Upon completion the Meeme House will serve as an interactive Living history museum where visitors will be transported “back in time” to its glory days of 1915.
