Manitowoc County Executive Bob Zigelbauer reiterating his staunch opposition to a-half-percent sales tax which could become a reality as soon as next month. The tax would generate $6 million annually. Zigelbauer says Finance Chair Paul Hansen and Supervisor Jim Brey are spearheading the effort to have Manitowoc become the 67th county in the state to implement the tax.
State law mandates that money can only be delegated by counties as they see fit. Hansen has stated previously he’d like the funds to be used for road infrastructure. Manitowoc Mayor Justin Nickels and Two Rivers City Manager echo Hansen’s sentiments stating numerous times that additional resources are necessary to meet rising costs and a stable infrastructure is paramount to support a strong and vital economy.
Zigelbauer responds.
And the County Executive adds a recent independent audit of the county’s books backs
His stance.
The County Finance Committee meets August 13th and the full Board convenes August 21st. Zigelbauer says he’ll veto the measure if passed by the board with a two-thirds Majority needed to override it.
